Do Mbuna cichlids eat their fry?

Do Mbuna cichlids eat their fry?

Unlike the majority of fish, who will happily eat their babies, male and female jewel cichlids team up to take care of their fry. However, it’s not just as simple as leaving the parents to take care of the fry and hoping for the best. By helping them out a little, you can ensure that at least some of the fry survive.

How often should I feed cichlid fry?

“So how often should I feed my fry?” At least twice a day. They can go for several days (once proven by a necessary trip out of town), but thin considerably as a consequence. I feed my fry 3-4 times a day, but each time, I give them only what they can consume in 30 seconds.

Some lower protein flake like spirulina will work as well. More (small) feedings (and water changes) are better than one bog one, as well. When they get a touch larger, I feed floating pellets. It gives them a chance to fill up and its stays there long enough for all of them to graze on it.

Why are my cichlid fry dying?

A lot of time with fry there are two potential issues – ammonia and food. If you are getting most of them to about 2 cm and they are dropping off it maybe that the food is too small for them to get enough. If they seem to be dwindling slowly, that would point more to water conditions.

How many fry do Mbuna have?

Do not be discouraged — after several attempts, most will catch on. Also the typical size for the first couple of hatching is 8-10, but with maturity, the female will soon start having 30 or so fry per hatching.

Should I remove baby cichlids?

Mouthbrooding species of cichlid and some other species actually care for their fry for several days (or longer) after they hatch. If you are able to determine that your cichlids do not typically care for their young it is best to remove the adults from the tank as soon as spawning is complete.

Do mbuna fry survive in aquariums?

If good water quality is maintained, the mbuna will breed readily in the aquarium, even in a crowded mixed mbuna tank. Left to their own devices, some fry will occasionally survive, especially if there is plenty of rockwork to hide among.

Can you breed mbuna together?

You can breed Mbuna one on one, and in a community tank. However, I discourage this for several reasons: Mbuna will cross breed. This defeats the whole purpose of successful breeding. It is OUR responsibility to see that this never happens.

How do I know if my mbuna is pregnant?

Mbuna are mouthbrooders, and the female will hold the eggs and then fry in her mouth after spawning for around 21-40 days. During this time she may become quite thin, as she will eat little or no food. The throat of the female will have an obvious bulge due to the fry, and dark spots due to the eyes of the fry can often be seen.

What is a Mbuna community tank?

There is nothing like the sight of Mbuna community tank, to push you off the deep end! All it takes is a 55 gallon tank or larger, with any type of rockwork up the backside. You can watch the fish for hours, as they interact with each other showing their brilliant colors. The constant activity in the tank will give you years of enjoyment.
